Local Tourism

Get out and see the Region

The Fort McMurray Tourism Association (FMTA) is a non-profit organization that promotes northern tourism in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.  Its aim is to attract visitors and to share accurate information about the region through education, special events and guided tours.

FMTA runs bus tours to Suncor Energy's oilsands site. The tours leave from the Oil Sands Discovery Centre and educate tourists on how the oil is mined, upgraded and sent for further refining. Because the oilsands are such a large and debated part of the Alberta economy, the tours are an important way to show Canadians how oilsands plants operate and how the surrounding lands are reclaimed following the completion of mining.

Some of the largest events that Fort McMurray Tourism organizes are trade shows in the spring and fall each year. The trade shows are held at MacDonald Island Park and attract thousands of visitors. Each show features over 300 exhibitors representing both local and non-local companies.
