From family-friendly urban waterparks to rugged ATV trails to fly-in fishing lodges, Wood Buffalo has something for everyone. And with our early sunrises and late sunsets, you can be sure you’ll have plenty of daylight to pack everything in!
Five Fabulous Spray Parks
For kids and parents looking for an escape from a hot summer day, five spray parks are available all summer long to keep you cool. Traditional playgrounds and trails are also available throughout the community. In fact, Wood Buffalo has over 800 hectares of pristine parkland and open space for you and your friends and family to explore!
Our region features several provincial parks and other campground facilities. Gregoire Lake Provincial Park, located only 40 km south of Fort McMurray, is a popular summer destination. A spacious beach area, playground and picnic facilities, full-service campsites and hiking trails make Gregoire Lake the perfect spot to spend a day at the beach.
Drive-In and Fly-In Fishing Lodges
For a one-of-a-kind fishing experience, both drive-in and fly-in fishing lodges operate year-round in Wood Buffalo. Take off in a floatplane and experience Wood Buffalo’s historic lakes and river systems from the air as you head out to Christina Lake Lodge, Gypsy Lake Lodge, or another of our many fishing camps to catch “the big one.”
Network of ATV and Hiking Trails
Many avid ATV enthusiasts call Wood Buffalo home, and the Athabasca Sand Dunes Ecological Preserve in the heart of Wood Buffalo’s Richardson backcountry features a network of ATV trails to explore. For the runners, walkers and bicyclers, Fort McMurray offers an extensive network of maintained trails, including the popular Birchwood Trails system.
Three Golf Courses
Golf enthusiasts can satisfy their cravings at one of Wood Buffalo’s three courses. The Miskanaw Golf Course, located on beautiful MacDonald Island Park in the heart of Fort McMurray’s downtown, offers 18 holes along the scenic Athabasca and Clearwater rivers. The Fort McMurray Golf Club’s 18-hole course is nestled in the lush beauty of Wood Buffalo’s boreal forest where golfers regularly encounter deer, foxes and other wildlife on the greens and fairways. Quarry Ridge greets newcomers to Fort McMurray, perched at the edge of a valley along Highway 63, offering 18 holes and an executive par-3.
For an extra rush, the McMurray Dirt Riders Association hosts a variety of races, family events, club rides and practices throughout the summer at the motocross track, located 14 km south of Fort McMurray. Adrenaline junkies welcome!
