Recreation

Solutions to keep you active

Wood Buffalo’s growing population has created a high demand for new and expanded recreational opportunities.  Over the past few years significant investments in outdoor and indoor sports facilities, walkways and trails have significantly improved the quality of life for all ages and interests.  Below are some of our newest and most popular recreational services and amenities.

Sports Complexes

One of the region’s most exciting recreation facilities is now open.  MacDonald Island Park is western Canada’s largest sports complex.  Situated on a picturesque island at the confluence of the Athabasca and Clearwater Rivers, the facility is home to the 5,200 square foot Fort McMurray Public Library and the beautiful 18-hole Miskanaw Golf Course.  At the island’s centre is the Suncor Community Leisure Centre which boasts three ice rinks, eight curling lanes, an indoor running track, a fitness centre, squash courts, two field houses, fitness studios, a climbing wall and the facility’s centre piece - a 10 lane Olympic-sized pool with a separate four lane warm up pool, two waterslides and a splash park.

The Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre is a multi-use sport and wellness complex situated on the Keyano College campus. The facility offers something for everyone with a wide variety of youth development programs, challenging fitness classes, adult sport leagues, prenatal classes and prenatal yoga.  Popular amenities include: a 15,000 sq/ft gymnasium, two field houses, group fitness studios, fitness centre and indoor running track.

Athletic Parks

Syncrude Timberlea Athletic Park is a premier outdoor sports facility featuring four slow pitch diamonds, one championship slow pitch diamond, three soccer pitches, one championship soccer pitch, one championship baseball diamond, cricket pitch, outdoor hockey rink/lacrosse box and a skate park.  Adjoining the complex is a clubhouse equipped with concessions, washrooms, meeting rooms, covered patio and a multi-purpose room with a commercial kitchen.

Fort McMurray’s newest recreation edition is the Timberlea Community Park.  Completed in 2011, the facility features a CFL size football and rugby field, a FIFA size soccer field, a 400 metre running track, all weather trails, an outdoor rink, a green gym, an event plaza as well as shot-put, discus and javelin throwing areas. In 2015 the facility will host track and field events during the Western Canada Summer Games.

Outdoor Green Gym

Two of Wood Buffalo’s greatest assets – the beauty of the boreal forest and the energy of the people – were combined to create Canada’s largest outdoor gym!  The Outdoor Green Gym, located on the Birchwood Trail System, features 14 stations with over 50 pieces of equipment built to last outdoors. Air walkers, ellipticals, spinners, leg presses and hand bikes are just a few of the many different types of equipment found at these stations.  The equipment is operational throughout the spring, summer and fall.

New Master-Planned Communities

Construction of new neighborhoods throughout Fort McMurray has been specifically designed with recreation in mind.  An overall vision is of sustainable, active neighborhoods with access to both indoor and outdoor recreational facilities, walking and biking trails, and plenty of open space for families is now the standard for development.
